Reddit is a very different social networking site than Facebook or Twitter, for better or worse. In this article, we'll cover the basics and some reasons why you should give it a try.

What isReddit, and how to start with it? This is a question that several people have asked me recently because, to the uninitiated observer, Reddit can seem intimidating and off-putting. There is a reason for this, of course. Reddit is a huge and diverse community. And just like a vibrant city, there are the interesting parts of the city and those notorious streets where you shouldn't park your car. So to speak, whenever Reddit ends up in the news, it's usually a reflection of the latter. Likewise, you shouldn't dismiss all of New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago because of their seedy neighborhoods, you shouldn't dismiss Reddit without visiting some of the best subreddits first.

Today we're going to take a look at what Reddit is, why you should bother using it, how to get started with it, and much more.

What is Reddit?

who knows and usesto digat its peak, you'll know exactly what Reddit is, as they both share the same underlying structure and purpose. Reddit is essentially a platform that relies on the wisdom of the crowd to decide what content on the internet is worth sharing and what is not.

The site has a distinctive robot logo that you may recognize, and the site is divided into different thematic sections called "subreddits." The sheer amount of "information overload" suddenly hitting you makes the site so intimidating. You must learn where to find what you are looking for and how to navigate the site effectively.

This is done through a voting system where users view links to articles, images and more on the web and decide whether to vote for or against the link. The links that get the most upvotes get more visibility on the Reddit page, while the ones with the most downvotes get buried and lost forever.

There's an old joke on the internet: "If you've just killed someone and want to hide the body on the internet, just open a thousand new Reddit accounts and vote for the body." No one will find you again.

But if your link gets enough votes, be prepared for an insane amount of traffic to that link. And by crazy, I mean crazy website.

What is the problem?

Get your link upvoted and get an incredible amount of traffic online. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well yes it is. Over thereThata catch. Simply put, Reddit and its users hate self-promotion, and Reddit forbids people from doing so. So you can't join Reddit, post links to your own website, your new ebook for sale, or anything else. Reddit users will form an online lynch mob and kick you out of town.

Of course, people can and probably will get around this restriction by opening an anonymous user account and pretending to be someone else. But in general, it's better to have someone else promote and recommend your material.

Why should you care about using Reddit?

There are many reasons why you should open an account and start establishing a presence on Reddit. Here are four off the top of my head.

Whatever your interest, there's a SubReddit for it.

Everyone has interests. It is what makes each of us unique. I collect stamps and books, as well as write books. Other people collect other things or have a skill.

Whatever your interests, it's always good to socialize with like-minded people. People who understand her obsession will bond with her and have a decent conversation about it. Reddit is the ideal environment.

If there isn't a subreddit for this, you can create one.

You can create your own subreddit page if there isn't a subreddit for your skill, interest, or hobby (which gets rarer every day new pages are created). But, and I say this from past experience, being a subreddit moderator is very hard work. Especially if your subreddit becomes very popular and the masses start to show up. You will have to eliminate spam, ban trolls and monitor all conversations.

But there are plenty of people who thrive in that kind of environment. So to each his own.

The site is a gold mine for writers, bloggers, and journalists.

As a writer, blogger, and journalist, I'm always looking for new story ideas. Throwing ideas around is something I have to do, no matter how exhausting and tedious it may be. Places like Reddit are nirvana for people like me.

No matter what topic you write about, you can subscribe to subreddits on that topic and see an endless stream of questions and threads, which are potential articles.

You can find experts to answer your questions.

How many times has your computer been burned? Or do you want to build a new closet and don't know how? The “traditional” method is to hire a professional, let them do the work, and then collect the invoice. Or, you can search for the appropriate subreddit, ask a question, and get answers from experts. Then do the work yourself for free.

Not only will you save money, but you'll also have the satisfaction of saying you fixed the problem yourself. win win

Creating your own subreddit

Creating your own subreddit is easy, but getting people to visit it often is not. Unfortunately, this is not an "if you build it, they will come" situation: it takes a lot of work to maintain a community.

On the right side of the page you will see this.

CliqueCreate your own subreddit. Fill in the details on the next page and the subreddit will be automatically created for you.

Some interesting subreddits to get you started

Here are some subreddits I belong to that I find extremely interesting. You also can.

  • Ask me anything(AMA) – Probably one of the most famous and popular subreddits. World famous celebrities, as well as ordinary people with interesting stories, offer to answer questions about anything.
  • arteporn– despite the 'pornography' in the title, there is nothing x-rated about this page. It's just art that people like. If you are a fan of art, this is a page to subscribe to.
  • EarthPorn– again, no porn in this one. Pretty great pictures of places on Planet Earth.
  • Explain it as if it were five years old.(ELI5) – This page is for difficult questions explained in a simple way, “as if you were only five years old”.
  • professional life advice(LPT)- Are you looking for some good tips and advice to live your life? Then Life Pro Tips can give you some tips.
  • Today I learned(TIL) – If a Reddit user has discovered an interesting fact, they can list it here on TIL.
  • thoughts in the shower- This is one I love. It's a collection of random thoughts you might have while you're in the shower. For example,Feeling the need to pee the moment you get into bed is the human equivalent of trying to shut down a computer with applications still running.

There are many tips and tricks to become a better Redditor. So here's just a sampling of the best.

Two Factor Authentication

The Complete Beginner's Guide to Reddit: What to Do and How to Do It (18)

Reddit recently introduced two-factor authentication to protect user accounts. This was met with a collective head scratch because while 2FA is generally welcome, people questioned why it was necessary for Reddit accounts. There is nothing in a Reddit account that someone can steal!

But if you're the paranoid type, you can turn on 2FA.just go to this pageand scroll down to the bottom.

Links to individual posts

If you want to link to individual comment threads, Reddit provides a short link to the page. Look to the right sidebar and you will see the link to copy and paste.
