Work summary
Under the overall supervision of the Deputy Director of Leadership Development, the Director of CEPA oversees all aspects of the fiscal, administrative, and programmatic activities of the Center for Education Policy and Advocacy (CEPA). In cooperation with the CEPA Advisory Board, it develops and implements CEPA's mission, goals, and assumptions, and develops and issues final decisions regarding the department's policies and procedures.
Basic functions
- It directs CEPA's administrative activities, oversees the preparation of the annual budget to be submitted to the Board for approval, and submits budget requests to the Student Government Association (SGA) and other funding sources. Manages budget expenditures for operations, maintenance and programs, prepares purchase requisitions and approves invoice payments. It keeps records of all administrative, operational and programming matters. Prepares program reports for use in accordance with the Vice Director of Leadership Development recommendations.
- Advises SGA, their agencies and registered student organizations and advocates on their behalf, provides advice and education on a wide range of local, state and trustee policies and university governance, drafts proposals for trustees and campus policies and state legislation in areas that reflect student concerns.
- Liaises with members of state government, the university chancellor's office, community and campus leaders, and Student Engagement and Leadership (SEL) leaders. Oversees student advocacy activities related to promoting, opposing, or influencing legislation and/or the actions of local or state leaders on issues affecting the general welfare of students.
- Works with SGA to identify student needs/concerns and directs related campus learning activities, designs or assists with research and educational activities, oversees survey and focus group development and report preparation, develops policy proposals, and prepares reports for consideration by appropriate university governing bodies in areas reflecting student concerns and contemporary models of leadership and development.
- Develops the internship program and supervises, trains and evaluates interns using the curriculum; acts as liaison with faculty sponsors. Assists interns to develop and implement independent projects and programs.
- Hires, trains and supervises all student employees in the organization. Through constant reflection and evaluation, it promotes employee effectiveness in a student-run university organization.
- He works with students to determine the programmatic direction for each of CEPA's major campaigns, such as Food Justice, Restorative Justice, and Debt Free Future.
- Creates and oversees leadership and service programs including Alternative Spring Break, MassImpact and related programs during peak programming periods.
- It maintains practical knowledge and best practices related to current political, economic and academic issues in higher education.
- He participates in SEL and Student Affairs and Campus Life staff meetings and committees and may serve on various university-wide policy committees, boards and task forces as an advocate for undergraduate students.

Minimum qualifications (knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, certificates, license)
- Bachelor's degree and five years of postgraduate experience in leadership of student or related organizations OR Master's degree in a related field, but not limited to public policy, higher education, law studies or political science and two years of postgraduate experience with student organizations.
- Demonstrated organizational/research skills and significant knowledge of public higher education issues.
- Experience with budgeting and resource allocation.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proven ability to build positive work teams.
- Proven ability to work effectively with a wide range of colleagues, students and stakeholders. Excellent organizational communication and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to cooperate and collaborate.
- Experience using personal computers including experience with Windows, MS Office software (Word, Excel) and on-line resource development such as web development.
